On the vacuum operated systems, the defrost is the default position, so when there is no vacuum, it goes to defrost.

Got the two type on my truck and it really help the batteries and a quicker warm up. I plug it in for an hour. The one on the radiator hose does a good job but it is not as good as the one on the engine. I just plug the block heather on very cold mornings, If I want a quicker warm up, I plug in both, it reallly works good.
