alternator/vacuum pump belt problems

Alright, my Dad has a 1990 f250 diesel ( 7.3 w/the banks turbo kit ). Every 8-9 months the truck pitches the alternator and vaccum pump belts. There is also a lot play in the alternator to the crank shaft. He uses gates belts. Are there any factory tech notes to this problem? Anyone else have these problems? If so, what is the solution to this problem. Thanks very much.

Is there a pulley with a ruff edge ? or excessive play?
I would look into the tensioner pulley. I believe they had a problem with that part of the fan belt area. Dont quite understand play from alternator to crank area ?

Ask for a premium belt not just a brand name, they cost more but they stay on the engine a lot better. They also slap a lot less than the cheapies do.

The alternator belt is the one that gives the problem, when it goes it knocks the vacuum pump belt off. That is a bad thing, when it goes, so do the brakes.

That free play between the v-pump and alternator is normal. It doesn't look like it should be, but check any 6.9 or 7.3 when it's running, they all jump around down there.
V-Belts don't have tensioner pulleys.

It is really shaking in this area. It looks like the engineer never looked at it after thinking about this set up. I had a 93 before with the long belt and tensionner, much better. There seem not much to do but I will check the idea of using a shorter belt, like KCKtilt did, interesting...
