Another Engine Break in question

Reading the "Engine break-in" procedure in the Tech Tips section at the top of this Forum, it left out a number for peak rpm's during "break-in". The thread stated that you should run it in the lower gears to near red-line rpm's and then coast down. What would be acceptable for "near red-line" rpm's? I have been following the procedure by accelerating in the lower gears to apprx 2500 - 2750 rpm and then letting off the accelerator until nearly stopped. Is this correct and how many times are recommended?

Your tachometer has a redlilne of 4K rpm's--I doubt if the computer will let you get there tho. Take it out on the highway and drive it at a NOT steady speed. Vary from 40 to 70. There's really not a set number of times. I wouldn't baby this motor--they're a LOT tougher than people seem to think. I think lots of the EGR problems are from puttering around and not "BLOWING IT OUT" so to speak. It's made to WORK let her fly. Also--if you've already got 1000 miles on it as I saw in another post you're good to GO. These motors really don't "break-in" til about 30K miles.

Appreciate the comments. My tach goes up to 5000 but I see no red-line marks anywhere on it. Judging by my rpms at 70 (around 2250) it would be hard to even get to 4000. Good to know the limit though!

Yea, on the new dash design for 2005 they removed the tachometer redline markings. But it is governed around 3850 rpms or so. I followed the breakin procedure too for my 2005 and discovered that.

I guess I need to climb in a new SD and see what's really new from my '04. I guess the redline is really useless since the computer controls all those functions or unless you run a programmer which removes the speed delimiter. I'm waiting for a debugged 6.4L twin--maybe 08? when I can really have a hotrod diesel. Of course by then I won't be able to afford one--they'll probably be 75K
