Does anyone else have a problem starting the 6.0 first thing each day, or am I expecting too much. I have a Yanmar diesel in my boat and it starts after turning over once. Extremely easy on the battery. The 6.0 in my one month "old" turns over and over before it finally catches.
Is that the nature of the beast, or do I have a potential problem? I have 1100 miles on it, just started adding Diesel Kleenz with this tankfull. Have about 40 miles on the tank now.
Taking off this Wednesday for 3 weeks on the road, not towing.
I presume that you are waiting for the glow plug light to expire, meaning that it is ready to crank. How long in time are we talking about 3 sec, 12 sec? The time is important, it will be able to help us help you.
In 2001 I ask the same question of the 7.3L I had and was told by the mechanics at the dealership that it would not crank until the oil pump reached pressure, not sure how much pressure. I quess that means the oil would have reached the top of the engine and not have a dry start. I would think it would be the same on my 04 6.0L it does turn over say 3 to 5 revolutions before canking. Hope this is of some help.
I would guess 3-4 seconds. As I said, this might be normal as I understand that the 6.0 has a different type of injector than my Yanmar, it's just that I am used to maybe 1/2 second of turnover prior to clatter clatter, not 8 times that long.
the 6.0 injectors fire by the engine oil pressure. so when you turn the key it takes a sec or 2 for the oil system to build up enough pressure (it takes a lot) and fire the injectors. if i am wrong on this i am sure others will correct me.
Mine starts basically as fast as my gas burner. Never have to crank it more than two seconds. Ole gas burner has 260K on her and hits as soon as the key is turned. Only problem I ever had was when the tranny harness got too close to the headers and got roasted--drove the PCM crazy til I got it rewired. No problems either, but then I always run the powerservice too.
Mine's the same way. 2-3 seconds each morning after the glow plug light turns off, although it drops to 1/2 sec if the engine is warm. It's as if the oil pressure for the injectors drops after sitting for a few hours. My V10 starts so quick - I just flick the switch - so I'm still getting used to the 6.0.
