I'm considering a 1997 F250 HD... 4WD, XLT, Extended Cab / Long bed.... 64,000 miles and one owner. It's a 460 5-speed, and that's everything I want. It's also blue, and I really like blue!
Truck appears to be in excellent condition... but its 1500 miles away. Looks like I can fly there (great rust free climate) for $200 on Southwest and drive home... probably 2 days of driving... if it gets 12 mpg on the highway I'll need just over 120 gallons of fuel... or about $300 in gas.
It just what I'd want & I'll keep it for-almost-ever or longer... clean Carfax too... is this a buy?
Dealer wants $9995 + $200 flight + $300 fuel = $10,495... can an 8 year old truck be that nice?
We recently retailed a '96 f250 S/C. 4X4, XLT, 460, Auto, about everything you could hang on the thing from the factory, plus an expensive canopy. 43K miles. Truck was absolutely shrink-wrapper new, we sold and serviced it from day 1. It brought $14K, and took two days to sell.
As always, that depends. My 1993 cost me $10,000 back in 1999. It was a one owner truck with all the paper work, service records and the original window sticker. It has been a sweet truck, and I would have traveled that far for the right one. Sounds like it is worth a look, if you don't like it you are out only the air travel. Also, once you are on the dealer's lot they may be willing to negotiate further rather than let you walk. These trucks are becoming unpopular in my little slice of sunny SoCal because of fuel costs but I feel if you buy it right, it will serve you well.
You're a little optimistic with the 12 mpg figure. Most 460s won't do more than 10 mpg. So you might want to take a little more than $300 for gas.
$10k doesn't sound out of line for that truck. It might be a little high, though, considering the incentives on new cars right now, which drives down the prices on used vehicles.
Yup, Popa's right. What you describe sounds like a good deal, especially if it has the features you are looking for. Jroehl is probably right about the gas money. 460's drink it like it's 1960's prices. I have no experience with Carfax but I have heard good things. Still, before you fly out there you might want to do all you can to make sure you are dealing with a reputable seller. The big thing is to make sure the truck has passed state inspection where you are buying it from, and even better that it will pass in the state you live in. Good luck and safe journey, Karl....
Thanks for all the responses... I'm still adding up the fuel bills... mph sure hurts mpg! I did 1482 in about 22 hours not counting a five-hour layover in the cab. Runs nice, some little issues, but overall worth the ride!
Kewl! Considering those two key words "rust free" I think it was a good buy. the mileage will hurt a bit, but think what that truck would have brought if it was a diesel. ($15K? More?). buys a lot of gas.

Yeah, if I had to drive it much the mileage would be tough.
It certainly won't be a commuter car though. I did manage to get 12.25 mpg on the 1482 mile drive home. Better than others said, but worse than I thought. I have an old Mercury with a 460 in it, and it'll do better! Of course, it's not 4wd, doesn't have 4.10s, and generally isn't cruising at 80 mph.
I was getting 11 during the day and over 13 at night... when I slowed down to 70.
It's got a couple little nickel-dime issues, but "rust free" is oh-so-nice here in the heart of the rust belt!
Sounds like u got a hell of a truck. Im still curious to see how much u spent on fuel and how expensive it was wherever u got fuel. Here in Ohio its 2.59 a freakin gallon. I think the truckers who haul it should go on strike so they'll lower prices but hey, thats another story.
I added up the fuel bill... about $290... within $10 of my airplane ticket on United to fly from Pittsburgh to Denver!
I didn't pay much attention to what I was paying... just filled 'em and hit it. Ohio did seem expensive though... I filled up just after crossing the Indiana state line and do recall wondering if I should have gotten gas in Richmond instead!
I was trying to make time the whole way so I picked whatever was closest... heck at 12 mpg you can't afford to drive out of your way to save a few pennies!
Whatever the gas cost though it was worth it to be away from rust!
