I need a smog pump on my 86 f150 with a 302 to pass inspection. i know nothing about where it goes. I have a few ?'s It has a belt right? if i buy it at autozone, does the belt come with? where on the motor is it located?
Too bad you don't live closer, I have an extra one just laying around I don't need. ( I was going to use it as a onboard compressor to run air horns)
It sits on the passenger side of the motor. Yes, it needs a belt and no it won't come with one when you buy it.
I would go to a junk yard unless you already have the empty bracket on your motor snce you are going to need all the mounting hardware, brackets etc plus you could get a look at it while you are removing it so you know how it all goes back together.
It also has the airline that goes from the pump to your exhaust either near or directly into your catalytic convertor. It is like a 1/2-3/4 piece of steel pipe.
Lee is right - your best bet is the yards since they will have a whole system to look at and all the bit and piece parts you'll probably need. I think there's also a vaccuum operated control sometimes called a gulp or anti-backfire valve.
You may also need a pipe with fittings on it that runs to the back of both cylinder heads, it should have a checkvalve on it too.
Check your cat converter for air inlet piping - it should almost definitely be a dual converter (with an air inlet).
Also look around the web for info on "Thermactor" systems, which is what that is. There is a certain amount of info in most manuals on it, mainly how the valves and controls work. There isn't much to them.
Thanks to the pa inspection laws, I had to get a smog pump for my 86 f150. Well it doesnt fit. Does anyone have any pics of a smog pump on the 302 motor. Numbers on the smog pump would help also. How do i tell which engine size i have too? that could be the other problem.
Thanks alot.
I know my 1980 302 that had v-belts, mounted the pump above the alternator. There was a special bracket that mounted the alt low on the passenger side, and the air pump right above it. I could not figure out how the belts ran though, till I saw a picture of a very short belt running from the alternator double pulley up to the smog pump. What a rig.
Here's how to tell if you have a 302 or 351w.

Just changed out the smog pump on my 86er 5.0 302. Had to take the first one back because the port was on the bottom, instead of out the back. Autozone said sorry. So I returned it. Went to Advance Auto and told them my situation. The next day, I had a smog pump, but the back fitting was an ell instead of a straight. Had to swap out fittings, but fit fine.
