Diesel Question!?

I'm looking at a 1994 F-250 Std. Cab Long Box. It is a manual with 109000 miles. The dealer ship put in a new turbo (rebuilt i'm guessing) they are asking about $9000. They also said they are going to be stiff on this price because they need to make a profit, I'm not to sure about the price. My other question was it is only a "Turbo Diesel" not "PowerStroke" What is the drifference and would it be wise to look for a PowerStroke?

Thanks fellas -- love the forums too

If it is an IDI turbo diesel, I'd love it. Oh, I love my Powerstroke, and it makes a lot more power than an IDI diesel. BUT - it is much more expensive to repair (there is no excuse for the price of the injectors) and it has LOTS AND LOTS of sensors that go bad and kill it.

Then again, the PSD makes a LOT more power....

94 was the changeover year from IDI to Powerstroke. Early models were IDI, and about 94-1/2 they changed. Easy to tell the difference if you know what to look for. Check for an injector pump and fuel injector lines to each cylinder. If it has these, then it is an IDI, and if all that goes into the valve cover are wires then it is a PSD.

another way to tell is the eighth digit of the vin will be and "F" if its a stroke.
and all 94.5 trucks were manuals no e4od's that year on a stroke. the simple fact that its a manual im guessing its a stroke d. good luck i hope you score it.

That is the top front center of a 94 IDI turbo diesel engine.
If you do not see that stuff it is a Power Stroke.

Well I found out it's an IDI diesel. Just wondering if I should rather spend some more money on a stroker or not? I guess it was a international diesel that is in it.

Also does 8900-9000 sound like too much for this truck? The turbo was rebuilt and that is a bout it. I was thinking more around 8000 but the guy didn't want to budge on price.

Thanks guys for the speedy responses too -- =D

i have driven both a powerstroke and driven some a IDI non turbo but you will probably kick yourself if you bought this truck. yes it has low miles which makes me wonder why it needed a turbo??? but the power between the two is unmistakeable!!
the price seems about right considering the mile and if the truck is in great shape but you have find a powerstroke with a few more miles on it in good shape for around 10,000. i would wait and find a powerstroke. don't know what part of the country you are in but texas and western states have an abundance of nice powerstrokes that are cheaper. i live in michigan and was about 2 weeks away from buy a plane ticket to texas to drive home a truck. but then stumbled on one here.

autotrader.com is great site to look for trucks!!

To me it seems pretty high for that age of truck. Particullarly in WI where they use salt on the roads in the winter. I wouldn't be worried about the IDI diesel though, unless you really need (not just think you need ) the power of the PSD. The IDI sure has a lot less to go wrong with it, particullarly on the electronics end of things.

Sure, you can't chip it and do many of the other expensive things that some PSD users do, but most PSD users don't do those things anyway (although it doesn't seem like it based on the posts on these pages). Many will disagree with this, but mods to increase power will generally reduce mileage, unless they are just simple mods to increase airflow in and out of the engine. As a general rule, any time you increase power via more fuel it will cost you at the pump unless you drive like Grandma. With an IDI you don't have to worry about the $$$$$ for PSD injectors, HPOP, CMP sensor, IDM, etc, etc, etc that all cost $$$$$$$$ to fix, unless you are very mechanically inclined and can do most of it yourself. But this is just my opinion, so do what you want.............

Definitely don't get the IDI find a nice PSD the power difference and mileage are big time different. i used to have an 87 IDI with ATS turbo and averaged 11mpg and it was still a slug, I have a 96 PSD and have also had a 99psd and they both rock powerwise even stock.. many more performance options for the PSD too and they only made that IDI factory turbo for 1 and 1/2 years so parts are $$$ to find

in texas, february of last year, i bought my '95 stroker, for 4300. it's a reg cab, longbox, with a 5spd and 184K on the clock. now, its got stacks, killer stereo, a new tranny (syncros and clutch assembly), new tires, AND, its paid off now. its also got nearly 213k on it and still runs like a bat outta hell. wait for a Powerstroke, and you can get them for fairly cheap here in Texas if you can find someone willing to part with it. Ebay is a good place to start. and if you find one in/near San Antonio, i'd be more than happy to go test drive it for you to save you a trip down here. good luck.

Since we've determined that an IDI engine is the threads topic, I've moved it to the appropriate forum.

southpaw, which parts are so expensive on the 1 1/2 year turbo'd IDI?

for where I stand, I see an IDI 7.3liter engine that was used from 88-94 with an ats turbo on it.
Ats has been fast and efficient (fairly cheap too in the big picture) on all the turbo parts.

9000 is a decent price for that truck, and yes it is harder to get more power out of an idi because u have to be more creative and know something about the basic workings of a diesel. u can't just simple spend 500 and throw a chip on it. in terms of same year my 94 idi will keep up with 94-97 powerstrokes and all thats done to it is exhaust and turned the fuel up a little bit. plus i get 14-15 my buddy had a 99 stroker and only got 16-17 not a whole lot of difference if u ask me and his brother and old man only get 10-14 with 01 & 03 (7.3l)
