My 1992 F-250 7.5l is going on its thirt Catalytic Converter. Does anyone know what could be causing this. The plugs indicate all is burning properly. Help.
Reading the plugs is not as easy as it was with carbs. Hows the motor run? If it's running rich it would cause the cat to go...
Also, check the Thermactor air system to make sure it's functional, but a computer test would help figure that out. Check the computer for codes, you can do a search in this forum for "computer codes" with the search function (link above). The thermactor system puts extra oxygen into the exhaust system so the cat would function properly, if that doesn't work it would screw up the cat.
You can get replacement cats for 60-80 bucks through the aftermarket. I mention this because most poeple over-pay for cats becasue they are unaware of this.
Thanks for the info. There are two air lines entering the cat from the top. The rear line had rusted away at the connection and was just sitting in place. I bandaged it up but the damage may be done. I was able to locate a cat on the net for about $250. I would be intersted to know if and where there is a better deal. I have the 1992 7.5 liter 2wd, F-250. That may be a more expensive model. Again, thanks for your help.

Thanks for the info. My cat was bad according the Meineke. They siad there was rattling inside. My cat has two air inlet hoses on the top. The aftermarket ones on the net show either one or two inlets. The universal has no air inlets. Suggestions??
i looked at advance auto and that is one big motha of a cat convertor, the pic shows the two air inlets, it looks like the front exhaust inlet is huge and that is why so expensive. advance had them from 300 to 500 so 250 sounds good.
i would call a few muffler shops in your area, find an old cusom place, and have them look at your truck. maybe they can get one cheaper for you.
summit racing may have what you need.

They always say its rattling, then they bang on real hard with a wrench to show you!
I never go to them, Midas, or Monroe anymore. Too many rip-off attempts.

CATCO CATCO CATCO...........there I said it.... They're like 60 bucks out of summit.
you are half right svtcobra, this is a wierd cat, it is large and oval in front and two air inlets on top. summit lists a catco part number CTO-9900 for $197. look it up and you will see why so much. go to summitracing.com and see.
Universal 3" catcos are rather inexpensive...... I paid 50 something for my 2.5" out of summit a couple years back, and a 3" in/out shouldn't be much more....

That is precisely how you ruin a cat, by pounding on it so as to break up the ceramic inserts. If a muffler shop ever shows someone that, the shop should by a new cat for intentionally ruining it!
