I have a 78 F-100 with 400m motor and c-6 trannie. My truck has been sitting for 3 weeks,I went to start it and it turned over slowly then the starter solenoid stuck! The truck continued to turn over, even when the key was out, till the batt cables melted and the solenoid turned to goo! This all happened in about 15 seconds!Well,I changed the cables, batt terminals, starter solenoid. The truck turns over great now I just have no spark. The truck will not start. How do I check the ign module?Could it be the Regulator,If so how do I check?Any other suggestions?
How about the small wire that comes off the "I" terminal of the starter relay? This supplies 12 volts for spark during start up. Is it burnt up or maybe you forgot to connect it??
Take the module to auto-zone or somewhere like that. They can check it for you. They aren't too expensive to replace. I believe that hte start voltage comes off of the key on the later models.
I would also check to make sure that you do not have a burnt fusable link and that they are all hooked back up on the battery side of the solenoid.
The starter relay should have 4 terminals on it 2 large and 2 small. One large should have the battery + wire and maybe a few others on it, the other large should have one wire direct to the starter, one small should have 1 wire on it ("s" terminal) closes the relay when it gets 12 volts from the ignition switch, the other small should have 1 wire on it it ("I" terminal) and should go direct to the coil.
Quick way to check start circuit and module.....jump 12 volts from battery direct to coil + then try and start the truck. If it starts disconnect the jumper wire if it keeps running the module and ignition switch are fine the problem is in the wire from the "I" terminal to the coil +.
If it doesnt start the module may be bad so get it checked.
Sparky
ps
Aa far as I know all pre 80's Ford trucks all have 4 terminal starter solenoids. After 79 I am unsure as they are too "new" for me.
sparky is right, on a duraspark if the I terminal is not connected the truck won't fire while cranking. this may be different on later cars but not on these trucks. hawkrod
