I have a rear end howl problem in my 2004 F150 2 Wheel drive. Dealer replaced ring and pinion at 9000 miles. It was worse when they got done. I took it back in and they put on 3 new tires. It is no suprise to me, the rear end still makes noise. It is obvious they are not setting the rear end up properly. Anyone have any experience with the right contacts at ford to get the dealers to do the right thing. I have owned GM my whole life. Tried this Ford. May be a mistake. Also stalled at stop lights. They repaired the fuel injection. The transmission also went out. I bought a new expedition for my wife. The air conditioner failed and the transmission went out. Wouldn't you think they could make a transmission last for more than 8 or 15 thousand miles. It used to be a joke that Ford rear ends all howled in 1949. Wouldn't you think they would have it figured out by now. They used to tell you to shove 6 bananas, or sawdust or ground hamburger in the old Ford rearends that whined if you were selling the vehicle. Ford couldn't fix them in 1949 and they still can't fix them. They wonder why they are having financial difficulties.

Don't have any problems with mine
Don't forget you always hear about the bad ones, and never hear about all the good ones.
There are many posts on many forums regarding problems with rear end howls in Ford from 1998 to current. You would think that someone from Ford would jump on board and guide some of these people with problems to a fix. It doesn't seem like the dealers know how to fix them. I have several GM products, as well as a Jeep. None of them have a rear end that is noisy. I bought 3 new Fords, and had trans & rear end problems with 2 out of the 3. I am looking for solutions, not here to complain. Maybe Ford is buying their parts from China. If that is the case, it would explain the problems. They never will be able to fix it.

My brother's 99 Z71 spit out the ring and pinion, no howling, just broke and he babied that truck.
What I heard was that ford was getting bad gear sets from their supplier, and now they have the new set out which will fix the problem if set up right. I have done6 rearends with the new gears 2 of them were in explorers and none of them whined when done and if they did I sure as hell would not have released the veh to the customer.
Thanks for the encouraging post. they had to order the ring and pinion set that they put in mine. One would think that they would be shipping the new ones, unless ford is continuing to ship old sets with a problem. Mine growls so bad around 45mph that I can feel it in the steering wheel. When I picked it up at the dealership, they had replaced 3 of the 4 Continental tires as a fix. This dealership has been in business for 80 years. Hard to believe. There was nothing wrong with my tires. Truck only has 9,000 miles on it. I really need to Find the right people at FOMOCO. Not sure I want these people working on my vehicle. On my last truck, it took them a day and a half to install 4 new wheels and tires that I bought along with my 2001 Super Crew 4 wheel drive. they said the tires were too tight and they couldn't get them on the rim. I left town on a trip and had a blow out. The bead of the tire had broken and the tire blew off the inside of the wheel. Came to find out at a tire shop, they had put the tires on from the wrong side of the wheel, and stretch all of the tire beads. One broke and blew out while I was standing by my truck after coming through the mountaines in California. When I got back, my dealer replaced all of the tires with new ones. the truck only had about 2,000 miles on it at the time. Otherwise, it was a great truck. I actually liked it better than I do my 2004. I sold it with only 25K miles on it and bought this new one after listening to the advertising on the quiet steel in the firewall. Problem is, the truck is pretty quiet, except for the noise in the rearend.

i'm with you Mnf350.i get a lot of expl. navs. and exp. in for the noise.with the good gears that ford has got there hands on , i havnt had a problem yet.im getting quite a few vehicles in from the surrounding dealers unhappy repaires on there rearends.some people just dont have any pride in there work.
