Hi Folks, I traded for 1998 F150 with 5.4 4 x4 the truck has 146000 miles on it, and 285x75x16 tires on it. The mileage is around 10.5 mpg, today the check engine light came on and error codes for bank 1 and bank 2 (o2 senors I was told), and a very small miss at idle, then a mechanic friend advised to disconnect battery for 4 hours and to have dealer to reset computer for bigger tires. Any thoughts on this?
Do you have any idea of the previous maintenance? Disconnecting the battery will clear the codes, but it probably won't fix anything. 285's really aren't that big a tire from stock, did you notice any unusually shifting? 10.5 MPG is kinda low, maybe start with a tune up and take it from there.
Is that bank 1 sensor 2 or what? Either read the codes yourself or take it to Autozone and post back the exact code. That will help us a lot. Bad O2 sensors can really screw with your MPG.
What size tire was on it originally? The bigger tire turns less RPM at the same speed than a smaller tire so the odometer will register less miles. That can throw off your MPG calculations.
