First off I have to say my Excursion has been the best vehicle I have ever owned. I have owned it over 5 years now and have not had a single problem with it until this one which is fairly small (knock on wood).
My power locks have been fading recently. When I use my keyless entry or keychain unlock button, the driver door doesnt lock/unlock most of the time but the other doors seem to work. Recently some of the other locks have been acting up as well. I had my auto shop I normally have do my oil changes look at it and they recommended taking it to a dealer to have a "pin box circuit diagnosis". I am no mechanic but am fairly handy. Anyone have any suggestions on what I should look at?
I am installing the Autodax power lock kit ($29.95 for the 4 door kit). The lock actuators work very well and easily unlock the doors on my '99 F250 with factory-defective actuators. This is simply an aftermarket power lock kit from which I am using only the actuators - not the control module or other wiring. You have to drill and mount these on your door and bend a linkage rod, but it's very easy and far cheaper than the Ford acutators. Also, the Ford actuators are a pain to remove.
I'd just replace the lock actuators. I've replaced the locks on 3 doors thus far, takes about 20 minutes per lock. As MKostas pointed out, CIUNAK has a very well documented procedure here. The 4th lock (pass front) is acting up, so I'll probably take the plung & replace it in the next week or so.
I am having trouble with my '01 Excursion. The doors seem to work some of the time when it is cool, and not worth anything in the heat of the day. Is this pretty typical of the actuators or the GEM failing? I do get an audible "thunk" every time I use the puncher or the key pad, and from that and the commentary here, I am suspecting the doors, not the GEM- until today, because all but the driver's door have been a pain for a significant period of time, I thought it was the central unit. Now I am looking to the door units.
I will say that 29.95 is pretty cheap for a set of actuators. I will go look up AutoDax... any opinions for and against these? I hate to go to an aftermarket product unless it replaces the OEM product in a pretty seamless manner. Are they much different from one another?

i too went through this. the problem is in the design of the original lock actuator mechanism and motor used to move the mechanism. ford has since come out with an updated lock. it should show on the computer at the ford dealer that the old part number has been superceded with the new one. if not, have them check deeper into it cause i seen the computer screen for myself that it showed the old number and the new one. i was skeptacle (spelling??) at first that it might not work but all turned out ok. and it seems to be stronger too.
The locks on my 00 could not be counted on to lock (mostly in hot weather) the third year I had it, and I called the dealer 3 days before the warrenty expired. When I picked it up the day after the expiration date, they had replaced all the door lock mechanisms, but the not the rear hatch, so now the last two years I've been checking it with the key (mostly it locks, sometimes not, especially in hot weather), because the dealer will charge over $200 to replace that one too (since I didn't specifically include it in my request to fix the original problem-it seems to me that they should have been savy enough to replace them all). At some point I guess I'll break down and pay for that one.
