replace pickup coil, how?

replace pickup coil, how?
the stator assembly needs to be replaced, but the distributor needs to come out and then the gear removed...what happens if you dont have the tools to do this?
Can you go to a local junk yard and find a used distributor? and just replace the ignition module and drop that in?
