Had a problem like this back when I had a 88 full size bronco. Till one day it died and stayed dead. It ended up being a wire that was shorting out in the frame rail, location was just about under the drivers seat outside the truck. Took auto electrical shop two days to track it down. Spliced wire together where it was rubbed bare and all was fine after that.

damn.... i hope i don't have this problem....

was the problem intermittent before it died? after it died did anything work? did the starter start? sounds like the wire to the fuel pump was shorting... do you remember which one it was?

Don't remember what the wire went to but it did crank it just would not start. Shut down twice before it went completly dead. I thought it was the fuel pump at first. Had a buddy of mine that worked at a parts store so I got parts cheap. I changed fuel pump located in gas tank.(one that is with sending unit) Changed block on side of distributor, and I know there was a third thing but for the life of me I can't remember what it was. Nothing worked so I had it towed to an auto electrical place and after two days or so they tracked down the problem.

I think it is called the TFI module. On mine (87) it's mounted to the distributor near the bottom and has a plug hooked to it. I have to pull the distributor to get it off, but thats not too hard if you mark it first so you can bet it back correctly.

The grounding is a problem in Broncos also. look at the big wire and make sure its good and then look at the little ones that run off of it. If one of these breaks or the connection corrodes, the car will die. When it stops vibrating, it will start right back up.

one more thing.... i did the fuel filter today, and also took a bath in gas (you'd think by now I would be able to do this at least without getting dirty)

I was trying to do the plugs, but that 6" lift and 35" tires aren't making it easy.... so i put that off until tomorrow.

after i did the filter i thought my problem was gone.... i took a ride in the evening, the lack of power came back.

My parents' '96 Caravans did this before we junked them...turns out it was a bad transmission computer. Don't know if the Fords do it too, but you never know.

Yeah, the E in E4OD means electronic. It's computer controlled. That's about all I know about it, I'm pretty new to computerized cars myself. I can guarantee you that my Bronco will be the last computerized vehicle i ever own.

here's the update...

fuel filter... still stalled...
oil change + filter... still stalled..
air cleaner... still stalled..

TFI module.... SO FAR SO GOOD!

I went to the stealership and they wanted like 140$ for it... went to Kragens and found a copy part for $90.

Hope this fixes it.

I chased a similiar problem on my 92 Bronco. Get a new ground cable from Ford, it is around $45, make sure all of the connections to the frame, body, and block are CLEAN. The frame connection is what gave me the most problem. I think it might have to do with how the fuel pump is grounded...no fuel, no run...
