no interior light

Hey all,

I have finally decided to fix my interior light. Unfortunately the truck is not cooperating. Treat it better than my wife and this is what it does to me. Anyway, I replaced the switches(?) at both doors, they seem to be operating like they should. All my fuses are good. Put a new bulb in the dome. Still no light. Not even when I turn the headlight ****. I jammed my test light into the 2 wires going to the drivers side door switch, nothing. Please, help me get out of the darkness.

I can't remember if I tested for current at the switches when I fixed mine...I ended up "fixing" my dome light by realizing, after searching, that a previous owner had wired the dome light lead to the wrong connector near the switch. Get on your back and put your head next to the brake pedal and start searching (very uncomfortable and requires a small flash light). To the far right towards the channel that runs down along the edge of the cab, you should find the connector that goes somewhere from the switch to the dome light...if you have floor lights, they splice in here too...one lead is always hot for the bed light (I think) and the other is for the dome. If you can locate the dome lead, unhook it and jump a hot lead to it...see if the wire going to the dome light is good. Just an idea.

I'll give that a shot. Can anyone out there tell me which fuse is for the dome light?

The best investment you can make in your truck is to buy a repair manual. I like to get BOTH a Haynes and Chilton's because they approach the repairs differently and they have complimentary information. There should be markings on the fuse panel also, try "interior lights".

Thanks for using FTE!

The Haynes manual is very helpful when it comes to electrical. The schematics are thorough. "F7" is the fuse for the dome light. Forgive my laziness for not going out and checking if the fuses are labeled on the holder on my truck, but F7 is located closest to the corner holes. It's on the bottom where two fuses lay in line next to each other. F7 also is the fuse for the cigarette lighter. The one next to it - F8 is for the hazard flashers. Hope this helps.

Yes it did! Pulled out my haynes manual and took a look at the schematic. Went over my fuses and sure enough I had blown F7. And F8. And F whatever number is the brake lights. Replaced the fuses and everything works! I even had time to splice some wires up so now I dont have ten wires jamed into my fuse box. looks a hell of alot better. Now all I need to do is find a wire under the dash that is hot onlu when the truck is running (for my tach and overheat guage). I just don't like having wires stuck into my fusebox.

Think about the things that work only when the engine is running...
Wipers
Turn signals
Radio
Heater
Ignition...

Then avoid the things with motors running (interference and noise) or intermittent nasty loads, that might mess with the tach and what do you have left...

Radio

Splice into the power lead for the radio.

Thanks for using FTE!
