I heard a humming sound coming from the underside of my service truck, (04 F350 SD) I crawled under and saw a canister that looked like a fuel filter housing humming, So I figure gotta be some kinda pump???? But looks like a filter goes in there too. Any one know whay this is ??? Thanks.
Yes that is the fuel filter. Change at 12 - 15000 miles along with the other one on top of the engine. If you notice you don't have the pep from a standstill the filter probably needs changing about $70 - $94 depending on where you get it. Then it will scream...
Try getting them from oilguard, they sell Racors for a good price. Drain the HMFC once a month. There is an excellent thread that tells how to do it without getting fuel all over your arms.
I ordered from Oil guard and yes, they are Racor... just remember the oil filters are not.
Why drain every month??? If the light does not come on, why bother? I have only drained when changing the filter itsself every 15,000 miles per the manual.
The tech I use at the dealership said that between the two filters, you could extend the drain interval if you believe the fuel your buying is fresh and clean, but no damage will occurr to the injectors or pump due to having two filters. They will clog and give poor performance before any damage would occur.
I believe that too many people worry about water and drain so much that they run a greater risk of stripping the drain plug and getting fuel all over themselves.
Seems to me like a lot of effort... or one should buy fresher fuel from a higher volume source???
Obviously draining more often does not hurt anything, except, I have had zero problems and only drain every 15,000 miles.
My point exactly... too many people drain their water & fuel filter to often... even though it does not hurt anything... but it's a waste of time, effort, fuel and the risk of stripping out the OEM brass fitting it not worth it. If someone has that much water... find a better source for fuel (in my opinion).
Hard to tell if any water was in there anyway unless you can catch it in a clear/clean container and see if the fuel floats on top of any water.
I use Powerservice in every tank (as with any quality additive) and it will assist in "holding the water - if any" so the fuel seperator can hold on to it rather than allowing it to pass through. This is why no alcohol based products.... Alcohol holds the water so it will pass through the motor (like a gas motor does). A gasser will burn the gas/water mixture with no harm, just poor performance.
After 54,000 miles, I have only drained every 15,000 miles when performing the fuel filter change.
They were pictured on their site, but are they still available? When I called a couple of week's ago (and ordered non-racor brand), they were carrying the P/L filters instead of Racor since they were less money. Have things changed and they will continue to carry Racor branded oil filters or did I hear wrong and made a mistake? Do you know for sure they still stock and sell Racor branded 6.0L oil filters?
I paid $19.99 for the Motorcraft Oil Filter at an O'Reilly's last week. Walmart had the for $19.65. Oilguard price was right in line with that or higher for the Raccor before shipping.
