I've used electric water pumps on drag cars to cool down the engine after a run but I don't know how feasable to use on a continuous basis on the highway or even why you would want to do it. Electric water pumps would not be as efficient power wise as a belt driven pump if run continuous. They are powered off the battery, which is powered off the alternator which consumes engine power at a greater rate than the belt driven pump.

Just curious....I look for everyway to squeeze a horse. The water pump drains more than the alternator, and with a 180-200 amp alt im not worried about it.

Not always I don't think. An alternator has to convert mechanical energy to electrical energy with the associated loss due to inefficiencies and heat. The electric motor to run the water pump then has to convert electrical energy back to mechanical energy to drive the water pump once again with the built in inefficiency and resultant energy loss where as the water pump driven off the crank does no conversion. You cannot create energy. It takes the same amount of energy to drive the water pump whether it is driven mechanically from the crank or electrically from a motor. It's just a matter of which is the more efficient use of the required energy. A cheaper and easier way to save a few horses is by going to underdrive pulleys. Just be careful to not go too far and not drive the water pump and alternator fast enough.

So your saying that my 200 amp alternator which puts out 135 amps more than is required to run the vehicle.....will create more resistance in on the crank because I added another electric device to the system? Like if I roll up the electric window its going to reduce my engines power....The only problem I see is that were not drawing energy from the crank to power the pump its drawing from the alternator which is already drawing from the crank, so by eliminating the resistance that the impellor in the pump causes on the crank we have free'd up HP.

I'm not sure that the alternator is putting out the amps if you aren't using them. You ever hooked jumper cables up to a dead battery to jump off someone with your engine running and listen the the alternator immediately begin humming and your engine load down supplying power to the other car. Same principle.

I hear ya....I figured with a 200 amper and dual optima batteries i would be ok. I dont figure it would draw as much as my stereo would its like over 1,000 watts...I dont get any drain right now. I do understand your point though.

There are electric water pumps at summitracing.com

They have one that they say is a replacement for the 2003 Lighting.

There is another that they say is "enough for a 600 HP Oval Track car".

I have no experience with these but I would think you might want to install it so it won't run when the thermostat is closed.
