how do you tell the difference between 2 barrel and 4 barrel heads, just by looking that is?
No difference between 2v or 4v. That was primarily an issue with the 351c motors...

The "390 4v" pistons would be the units from a car, with higher compression than the truck, same as the 360 piston as far as compression height.
I bought a book at a book store which shows the casting numbers for the heads and what size of valves they came with and in what model of fords with cross references to intake size (2v or 4v). Some cylinder heads with 4 barrel intakes show bigger valves. The only true way to determine the valve size is to cross reference the casting number off the heads or measure the valve itself.
Yes, the 427 and 428 heads did come out with bigger valves. The police interceptor engines had bigger valves.
o.k, i think i will just stick with 360/390 2V heads and the intake and carb i already have. i looked in the classified ads and found nothing. my heads have broken castings on the exaust side so i have to replace them. if anyone out there has an affordable/rebuildable set, let me know.
Check with your local salvage yard or auto parts store. You can grab a set from the salvage yard for about $40, then have them rebuilt. Or drop into Autozone or the such and buy a complete head ready to go for around $160 each. These are generally the D2T castings and ready for bolt and go.
yes 360 and 390 heads are interchangable and they are fairly decent heads most all fe heads will interchange some are cobra jet which are rare but very sweet. make sure to look at the mating surfaces where the manifold touches the head and the intake touches also where the head touches the block if it is pitted you'll need to have them re machined, these heads are notorious for exhaust manifold leakage.
