By the size of the counter weight welded to the flywheel. Also by what engine they came off. Less than 81 302 and all 351w takes 28 oz, 81 and up 302 takes 50 oz. All 300s are internal balanced and have no counter weight.
thats the problem we have 2 motors at work 1 which has a vibration and another we need a flex plate for but are unsure as to what is actually fitted to them so how do i work it out
the cranks have 2cm on them and i'm pretty sure they should be 28oz balancers however can u use a 50oz balancer and flexplate on an older 302 or do you have to use the 28oz ones?
No, on an older one you have to use the 28oz. As ronclark said, the change to 50oz. for the 302 was in '81, so any 302 older than that is 28oz.
The flywheel and balancer will physically interchange, but you will throw off the balance by using the incorrect ones and induce a potentially engine-killing vibration.
If you can see the casting number on the crank, the 28oz. imbalance cranks started with 2M, then went to 2MA, 2MBA, 2MAD. The 50oz. cranks started with 2MAE through '86. I'm not sure how you could tell the difference by looking at the balancers and flywheels/flexplates, if you had one of each to compare side by side you might be able to tell. However, the early balancers had three bolts to hold the pullys on, the later ones went to four bolts. I don't know if that change coincided with the change in imbalance, but if you had a 3 bolt balancer I'm certain that it would be 28oz. I'll keep looking, haven't turned up any pics yet.
I have a 28 oz flywheel and a 50 oz flywheel at home. I can measure the length of the counter weight welded to the flexplates when I get home from work and let you know what the lenght of the counter weights are. The 50 oz is about twice longer than the 28 oz but I don't know the exact length without measuring.
Hey Bootie, sorry I took so long to get back to you on this.
I have a 50oz. imbalance flywheel off of a 5.0 Mustang, so I took a pic of it the other day. Here it is:
You can see how wide the balance weight is on it. A 28oz weight is about half that wide. I have a 28oz flywheel, but it's not where I can get to it right now and it's been lightened and rebalanced anyway, so a pic of it wouldn't really help you. Hope this one helps a bit.
Sorry I don't have any A/T flexplates to photograph for you. I will soon, but I have to strip the car and pull the motor first. It'll be a few weeks. ('84 Lincoln Town Car w/302, 50oz. imbalance.)
