Im in the market for a E-series van. I was told by the owner of a E-250 that the vehicle was exempt from emissions in the state of georgia. Is this true? Where can I find out?
There are a few states (like california, connecticut and a few other new england states) that have their own emission regs but for the most part its the Federal laws that apply. The main difference between states is whether or not they have inspection. Alabama doesn't so there is no enforcement of the federal emission laws there, don't know about Georgia though.
That said, emission laws are less stringent for vehicles with higher GVWR. So it would make sense that an E250 or E350 would have fewer regs that apply. I don't think anything is "exempt" until it hits the age limit.
You could check the Georgia Dept of Motor Vehicles website or the EPA.
Well, all vehicles are exempt in Georgia if they weigh more than 8500 lbs. Does the 96 E250's weigh more than that? I used to own a 95 E150 and I had to do emissions.
As far as I know only vehicles in the Atlanta area are even tested in GA. I live in central GA and we don't need emiisions testing although that may change down the road.
