Hey, some of you may remember my thread anbout wanting to build a stroker for my truck. Well, I'm not building a stroker anymore. What I have so far is:
I need to get rockers, valves, gaskets, bearings, ignition, fuel delivery (dual tanks), etc. This is my first engine build and I don't know much, but I want to learn. I just need some more experienced folks to offer advice. Thanks, Austynn.
Oh, by the way, this is eventually going into my 1986 F-250 HD 4X4 so torque is preferred.

Reason: because I'm an idiot.
well I will through a couple of things in, Rockers-well are you going to want to spend the money for machining for screw in studs, and guide plates if not go with the crane roller rocker conversion set for pedestal mount rockers. Valves ferrera makes some decent one piece stainless valves for these engines look on evilbay and you can find them new for around $140 set which is a good valve at a decent deal. Gaskets just buy a complete felpro gasket set. bearings I prefer Clevitte P series cl77 main, and rod bearings, and like durabond cam bearings. ignition is one I probably shouldn't touch cause I will recommend aftermarket and others on here will say just use the stock stuff, but I say run an msd 6a or 6al box, and msd dist. fuel delivery probably a good mechanical pump would be your best choice expecially with the dual tanks.
This one?: Summit Part Number CRN-35655-16 ? Then would I get stock ratio aluminum rocker arms? Also, on valves, do you think stock size would suit the rest of the motor well, or would you reccomend oversized valves? If so, what size? Thanks for responding, Austynn.
We went to Napa on Friday to see how the motor was coming after a week being there, and they said they wouldn't even start until around Tuesday. Then wew were at the 4X4 Jamboree in Essex, VT. Anyone here go?
Austin, I think you are on the right track with NAPA building the bottom of your engine. I would just do a valve job on your heads, replacing any thing that is worn beyond specifications. Then get the truck running. Drive it! You will find plenty of opportunities for improving what you have. Keep us posted! I personally would keep the stock exhaust manifolds for now. Dual exhaust with equalizer tube or X pipe will work well in a street driven 4x4.
It's coming along slowly, but I need to know what size valves you would recommend, do I need a vacuum advanced distributor, what do I need to have done to my D0VE-C heads to run roller rockers, and what rockers would you recommend? I also need to know how to find out what pushrod length I need. Thanks VERY much if you can help.
the dove heads should be able to use stud mount rockers, and look at the harland sharp rockers, good price and quality.
stock size valves, street driven 4x4 then yes vacuum advance. pushrod length you might get away with stock but any good machine shop/engine builder should have an adjusable pushrod to measure to get you an exact length.
only problem with the harland sharps seems to be getting proper valve train geometry they are based on BBC rockers not the ford rockers, and if you use harland sharps you will definatly need to measure for pushrod length as it won't be right with stock pushrods. My preference is ford motorsport blue rockers which are actually made by crane, and are a copy of hte crane gold rockers but usually cheaper.
stock size valves are ok, and are the same size as 351C 2V engines at 2.08/1.67, if you don't mind doing some bowl blending I would recommend upgrading to 2.19/1.71 valves but this will require cutting the seats (and possibly installing hardened exhaust seats).
Some dove heads may already be set up for screw in studs but if I remember correctly they used press in studs on most of them. but you are still gonna need to mock it up with the heads on the block, and cam installed to see if you can get proper valve train geometry or if you are going to need to machine the pedestals down to give more clearence with the guide plates, but if they have to work on them to work with the screw in studs then just have them take the thickness of the guide plates off at that time, and avoid the issue.
Ok, thanks. I'm going to keep stock sized valves for now, but I can't find them in the sizes you said. The stems are 11/32 I believe. Sound right to you? Also, the heads are at the machine shop, and I don't know what length valves to get. Anyone here know?
For rocker arms I would run Ford Racing P/N M-6564-C351 pedestal-mount aluminum roller rockers. Thats what I'll be runing on my F3TE's and from all my research they seem to be a good option if you are keeping a stock hyd. lifter setup(bolt right on, no machining.) They are $375.00 from Ford Racing or $361.00 from Summit.
(I just noticed that you had D0VE heads, so I believe you want Ford Racing P/N M-6564-A460, which are stud mount.)
