Cleaning VCR heads

Besides the cleaning cassettes, is there another way to clean these? I heard something like spraying contact cleaner on the heads. Any suggestions?

take the case off and put rubbing alcohol on a ear swab and rub the alcohol on the heads, then rub another ear swab to dry it off. you will be surprised the junk that comes off. thats what I have always done and my 11 year old vcr still works like new.

Yep, Big daddy got it dead on. A VHS !! I thought I was the only person on earth that still used VHS . My 4 head JVC unit that I bought in 1985 , stills works great and I have never cleaned the heads yet. I would never use one of those head cleaning VHS tapes on them either, because to me, they just pick up the dirt then drag it over the whole head system. ..

We have a dvd player now, but we will still rent movies in VHS if we can get them. Myself being one of long tooth, the DVD's have too much high teck gizmo's to deal with when you start them up. Just give me the ole' hit the > button , then grab a big hand full of buttered popcorn,

I agree on everything, except. . . I use de-natured alcohol.
You can get a can / pint / gallon of the stuff at your local home center.

Just like Brylcream. . . a little dab'll do ya!

I agree except do not use rubbing alcohol. Some contain a small amount of oil, while others contain just extra water. Use 90% iso. pro. alcohol with Q-Tips. If removing the cover is a drag then you can buy extra long Q-tips at most electronics stores (probably not RadioShack anymore) to reach in there. Taking gunk off the metal rollers really helps as well.

until the recordable DVD players come down in price i'm keepng my 50$ VHS. i use it to record shows so i don't have to sit thru the commercials. i wanted to watch Das Boot on history channel last week. it's a 3 hour movie. with the commercials it came to like 4.5 hours. i figured that's 1 minute of commercials for every 2 minutes of the Boot.
