I would suggest taking the head to a machine shop and have it checked for flatness, cracks, the valves checked and seals/o-rings replaced. A general reconditioning. Time and money permitting, pull the other head and send it out also. With 180K the other gasket might be getting weak. Check the piston height in the cylinder compared to the others. It may have a bowed the connecting rod.
yes check the piston height, have the head checked by a machine shop and like others have said if possible do the other side. chances are if the head is not flat you can't mill the head. many diesels the clearance for the compression is so close that if you take .005 off the head you could have contact between the piston and the head.
ok found some specs in shopkey at work. warpage can't exceed .0015 within a 2" distance or .004 overall distance. if warpage is found replace head. the head can't be resurfaced.
so a good machine shop will have that info and can't check it for you.
here's to hoping for a staight head.

Thanks for everyones help and suggestions. Ok, head gasket problem solved. New gasket installed, head is not warped, everything re-assembled. Now the entire passenger side bank is not firing. I have checked all the wires I disconnected during the head removal and everything is hooked back up right. While the injectors were out, they sat in water for most of a day until I realized it had rained in my bucket and then cleaned them the best I could before re-installing them. Would that have ruined all four injectors or could there be some other problem like with the idm or idm relay?
