Cool Help! 2002 Ranger Won't Turn Over (Good Battery, Dash Lights, 2.3L, MT, 40k miles)

Could anybody throw in their two cents on this problem? I have an '02 Ranger that will not turn over even with a good battery. When the key is inserted and turned, all the dash lights and headlights come on but the engine does not turn over. Could it be....

*Power Control Module?
*Ignition Module?
*Key?
*Whatever the part is called that reads the Key's security code (pls advise)
*Clutch Switch?

I am trying to avoid getting the run-around at the dealer and be able to drive to work on Monday! Thanks for your help

Are the battery cables clean & tight?

Have someone try to start it while you check for 12 volts from the ignition switch at the starter relay.

Has it faded out over time (i.e. starts got weaker and weaker) or did it suddenly just not start? If it's a manual tranny could be the clutch isn't engaging fully...

Start

Check your neutral safety switch.

I think your 02 has patts and that could be keeping if from turning over. It could also be the neutral switch, cables, relays. Have you done anything that would affect the patts? How did the problem start? The part that reads the key code is the power control module and the "antenna loop" around the ign switch.
Dave
on edit: woops,I see its a manual, so it could be the clutch switch instead od the neutral switch..

my 1986 2.9 ranger with an automatic does the same thing but makes a grinding/clacking noise by the passenger front fender... the starter is good. so is the battery...

My '04 2.3L Ranger had the starter go bad at 250mi. so I wouldn't rule it out.

hunter1988. The grinding clicking noise is the starter solenoid. THat should be an easy fix to replace.

`u can unplug the neutral saftey switch on the back of the clutch pedal and try it then, that would eliminate that problem... then i would test to see if the starter itself is bad... easiest way would be to have 2 ppl and a multimeter and have someone turn it over while u are testing it...

Matt

p.s. yes does it click at all, does the starter motor spin? any noises at all

if the starter is clicking then it prolly isnt good... sounds like the starter motor is out... u should pull it and take it to a parts store where they can test it on a starter machine

Thanks for the replies. Turns out that the transceiver in the ignition is bad so it can't read the security code from the key.

Same problem

It's like when you forget to push in the couch, and try to start it, not a sound. Of course I'm pushing in the clutch.

Hi. How did you replace the transceiver? Dealer part only? Did you have to get your keys reprogrammed? Thanks. trying to troubleshoot my no crank no start no click problem.
