Ok I have noticed a skip a couple times while running down the road in the past 6 months or so..I dont drive it alot but when I need it I need it..well last month it has seemed to be down on power..use to climb hills same spped at bottom as at the top loaded now it drops from 75-55..sometimes seems to have more power than others..here last week or so when idiling it would seem a lil rough & sometimes not..well this morning i was going to work & as I started it up motor seemed a lil rough..real shaky like..but it went on ok after reving up a lil..got maybe a mile down the road..turned left & started up the hill & like half the cylinders were working..no ck light & tach was working but finally died & wouldnt start back up..coasted down hill a lil & about 5 min later restarted it & wouldnt half idle..was gonna try to creep it home the last half mile & throttle didnt seem to matter it only idled..not throttle control..when i got home & parked it I hit the pedal & now have throttle control..idle seems like before..lil rough but I think it will drive..tach works great & did the way home also..Its a 94.5 or same as 95..first year of powerstroke..out 245k & it does have a replacement engine but not sure of the miles on it..never had a cps since ive had it..I knwo its a good idea to replace it but does it sound like the CPS with the tach still working ok? Also can you buy the CPS at local auto parts aftermarket like orielly auto parts, advance or autozone or is this strickly a dealer part only..
Thanks,Brian
I know its hard to find some of the problems these trucks have very easily..but I hate to go spend alot of money in the wrong direction..once you go so far you have to do other things also..any good write ups on how to check the wiring harness on the valve cover? Can the CPS be bad & tach still work?
Anyone else have any opinions? I also have a snapon scanner but for some reason it wont read me any codes or anything..the computer doesnt want to tell us anything where i have pulled codes with it before..any chance of the computer going out?
the wiring harness is a visual check. unplug it where it goes into the valve covers and look for discolored plastic or pins. can smell down the oil fill and try to smell the burning insulation. if everything looks good on the outside you can pull the vc's (the gaskets are reuseable) then check down each wire for discoloration, burned insulation.......it could be a failing idm also. the only way to test the idm is through the dealership they have the computer to do it. a cps could be failing and the tach still work. last cps i had to do was very intermitten and when it would stall it would fire right back up and tach was fine. do you have a chip in the truck?
No I dont have a chip in the truck either..all stock other than converter gutted 94.5 powerstroke..see its a rollback & very long so the tow bill would be alot if it breaks down on me out & far away..I went out to start & it didnt want to start so I hit the accelerater pedal once the hit the key & it fired up..seems to run pretty decent..maybe a slight roughness at idle..ran up & down driveway & seemed ok but kinda scared to drive further..any idea what would make me lose throttle control when whatever did happen? throttle works fine now..
WELL JUST TRIED IT..SEEMED TO RUN OK..got a half mile down road & it went crazy again on me..idle rough..barely made it home..no CEL & tach worked fine..was idling in reverse then a boost of power then it would die off & smoke a lil then quit..finally resart & all over again..runs fine now at the house..
Iam having the same problem ... i got replies that it was the IPR Injection pressure regulator ... and that there is a rebuild kit for $16 dollars at INTernational ... i have one ordered but wont be here until thursday ... I would also like to know if there are any writeups on removing the VCs to check the wiring harneses ... 1999 F250 PSD 7.3
