I am new to owning a diesel, 1996 F250, it was my grandfather's truck. I was driving in traffic and all the sudden the engine got real loud. Luckily I was 2 miles from home so I could get it there.
No warning lights came on, and it seemed to be running fine though I was being as gentle as possible due to the noise level. My guess is something in the exhaust system came loose but I was hoping someone might have some suggestions. Any help would be appreciated
Is it like knocking loud, or vroom vroom loud. I would crawl under the truck and give the exhaust a good once over. Look under the hood at the turbo and make sure the down pipe didn't come loose. By the way, welcome to FTE. Let us know what you find.
Thanks for the info about the turbo, Ill check the down pipe. As far as noise, I am pretty used to the diesel engine before this happened and it still seemed to run normal, though I was focusing on gauges and trying to keep the rpms on the lower side to be as quiet as possible (though it didnt matter). Best description I can come up with is it went from a yamaha to a harley (volume wise) in 15 seconds.
were you driving slowly in city traffic where the engine could possibly run hot enough where the fan had to kick in? my fan runs on my tuck when i start it up and drive it, it disengages at like 1750 rpm when accelerating...
Thanks for all the info, I had my first chance to look around this morning and found the problem. My belt tensioner seems to have broken and the unit was pulled forward so the fan was hitting the pulley. Gonna have it towed to the dealer to fix it, I cant seem to budge the unit.
Well a fan hitting on a pulley sure would make a loud noise! :-) I hope everything is fine and you only have to fix a couple little things and nothing to serious
