emissions ?
alright, im just trying to get a grasp on this whole 73-79 emissions cutback. i know that they changed the heads to drop compression, did something or another to the timing (what, im not sure, and what the change did) and they 'retarded' the cam( again, i have no clue what is meant by 'retarded' or what the change did) can anyone clear this up for me? or point me in a direction where these answers lye? thanks

Yup, ur on the right track. The compression in lower and the cam is retarded. That is why a lot of the guys buy the timing chain set for the earlier engines. If you know a guy at a parts house well enough go in and ask him to see a timing chain set for a 70 460 and a set for a 77 460. Pull the crank gear out of the sets and look where the timing mark is in relationship with the key slot. You will see the difference. I have heard guys reporting 30% improvement in power by putting the earlier set in their engines. I think this is an exaggeration because I certainly didn't see that kind of an improvement with mine. You do get an improvement in low end torque. So if you are towing or off road it is worth it.
