Timing Chain Questions

Hi,

I am new to the forum. I have a 92 F150 stepside that I stuffed a 77 Linc. 460 in. It has a c6 from the same Linc. I rebuilt it using a Crane 353901 cam, 9:1 pistons, L and L headers, Edelbrock Performer Intake and Edelbrock 650 carb. I use this to tow a 6,000# trailer mostly in hills and mountains.

Whwn I installed the timing chain, I set to to the center position. I can move it to the 4 degrees advanced position or I can get a 68-71 chain which I think will advance the cam timing 8 degrees and this chain should have a 4 degree increase position. I was wondering if anyone can tell me if what kind of power increases a new chain (68-71) would give me. I am interested in low end torque and rarely exceed 3500 RPM. Would the money for a new roller chain give me a power increase to justify it? Also, I get pretty good economy now and do not want to do anything to hurt it.

Can desk top dynos help nail this down?

John

using the early timing chain is a good idea but if you have to advance or retard your cam away from were the cam grinder made it to get it in the power range you want then you probably have the wrong cam.

GOOD POINT! Never thought of that if changing the cam.

I assume it would still be a good change for those of us that are running stock internals??. But then if you do the cam later .....

The early gears are straight up the late gears 87-97 are straight up. You really need to degree your cam to see if the ginder got it right if it is off more than a degree then I would use offset keys to get it set right. Usually advancing the cam 4 degrees helps some.

Another thing to add about degreeing cams. Some of the timing chain sets are off also. I recently found one that was 6 degrees off and it wasn't a cheap set either. It was a billet gear 9 keyway set. I know other people that have found other sets to be off quite abit also.

thats a good point I run the FRPP roller timing set, and it was off by 5 deg moved it to a 4 deg setting, and that actually moved it 6 degs went from 5 deg advanced to 1 deg retarded (and I went back to the origanal setting to make sure and it went back to the 5deg adv.)

I put the Milodon double roller in mine and it degreed staright up. I tried it advanced and straight up but didn't see much performance difference. I would definitely suggest the roller over the standard chain. It is a lot harder to strech a double roller.
