Anybody know of any ideas to remove rust w/o harming paint? I need to remove some light/moderate rust from some rare '47 California license plates. DMV says they need to be legible, and with some of the rust, they may not pass. Plates cannot be restored before they are examined DMV, so I need to leave as much of the original paint as possible. I have heard of using non sweetened grape Kool-Aid, that would seem not to harm paint, but anybody have any other ideas/products?
Cover the plate with paper towels and pour Vinegar on the towels. Leave overnight. I would test first on an old plate before using on the rare plates though. ...Terry
SIMONIZ Chrome polish cuts rust pretty good.Ive brought back rusty chrome wheels to look pretty good.Naval Jelly (that pink stuff) is also a good product,Ive used that on aluminum diamond plate on fire apparatus, but you need to check it out to see if you can use it on painted surfaces.Hope that helps ya some.
There's a thread about rusty tools in which some folks are talking about using an electrolysis bath to dissolve rust. I don't know if the process would attack paint or not, as I've never tried it, but I'd bet those who have would know. If it leaves the paint intact and specifically attacks only the rust, it might be exactly what you are looking for.
Yes there is a specialty rust remover made thats even environment friendly. It will remove even heavy heavy rust with unbelievable results. If interested I can get you the info from the remover. Expensive but second to none. I use it in auto restoration. I threw in some very (what looked pitted) lower control arms and they came out like new. There are also a lot of other rust conditioners/removers avail from your local auto paint supply.
I know Bondo makes a gel that you put on rust and supposedly you can wipe the rust right off after you leave it sit a while. Never tried it though, so I don't know how well it works.
If it's rust stains on the paint of the plate, you can use lime-a-way/CLR or other household products. They do carry a warning about not using them on painted surfaces, so I wouldn't leave them on too long. I had rust streaks down the side of a white car I was trying to sell. Cleaning those off made a world of difference and it didn't visibly harm the paint finish.
Go to: www.safestrustremover.com and check out their product. I haven't bought any yet, but it looks impressive. It should do what you want it to without damaging the plates. As little as you need to do the job, the cost should not be too bad.
