I just bought a 2003 EB with 17000 miles on it. 4.0, 2wd, automatic. Now it has a “tow package” but what does that mean. Just because it has an integrated hitch does that mean it has a trans and oil cooler? How can I tell by looking? How can I tell the gear ratio?<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
I bought an '03 new with the tow package. In that year it means, 2" class III/IV reciever, 2.73 limited slip rear differential, 7 pin trailer connection (and an adapter to flat 4 pin in the jack storage area, also a wiring harness to hook up an electic trailer brake controller), oil and transmission coolers, and I don't recall if the radiator is different or not (it was on the '92). Most of the tow packages in '03 seem to be on the V8's but mine is the 4.0L V6. An '03 without the tow package will still have the integrated hitch, but it is the smaller Class II reciever. What "tow package" means depends on the year of Explorer.
I do have the intergrated OEM class III/IV hitch, but thats the only visual. I dont expect to do much towing with the V6 4.0 but its good to know what's there.
2.73 gears and you're almost going backwards. That caught my eye too.
The Gen 1 explorers, at least my 93, the tow package gave you 3 things.
1) Bigger radiator.
2) Additional trailor light relay assembly.
3) A pigtail wire harness to hook to the trailer. This was custom and Ford had to provide it because it contains a looped wire that grounds out once connected to the car so that #2 above was enabled. Without the special pig tail, #2 above is inoperative.
We didn't get a receiver at all and had to special order our 3.73 limited slip diff's.
