I've got a 79 F150 with a 460. Somtimes after I shut it off, it will shake and rumble for a couple seconds before it quits making noise. It sounds almost like its coughing. It doesn't do it all the time, just some of the time. It runs fine otherwise. Does it sound like the carb needs adjusting?
It is called dieseling or run-on. 1 cause is if the idle speed is set too high. On some vehicles there was an anti-dieseling solenoid added to the carb. When the key is in the run position the solenoid extends to hold the throttle open to the idle setting. When you shut off the key the solenoid retracts and closes the throttle fully helping prevent dieseling. Try lowering the idle speed first. Check the timing and you could try a tuneup as well.
Even with all the controls in the world...a partially warmed motor with the choke still engage will cause it to diesel too. I notice this on my truck after short trips in the AM when she's still relatively cold. This comes back to the fact that idle speed will contibute to dieseling. Just a thought.. if this desribes your "occasional" problem.
All,
Word Brother; Testify! If the throttle plate is adjusted to far open your vehicle will run backwards after you shut it off! Advance timing is the other culprit.

Is your vehicle hard to get started hot? If so, it's your timing.
