On my 77 2wd F250, does anyone have any advice for removing the drums? I know I'll probably have to retract the shoes, but I'm not really sure how. After I do that, should it come offf pretty easy or will I have to use a hammer and heat to persuade it?
There is an star adjuster wheel that you need to turn to release some tension. It is accessed through a slot at the bottom, inside of the backing plate. It may have a rubber cover that need to be popped off. Use a brake adjuster tool or a flat blade scredriver to turn it. Start at the top and make it turn towards the earth to loosen. Heat is of no use. Hammering on the drum can crack it. Pull and wiggle and use a wood block with a small sledge and alternate sides. I had some so bad on a truck that sat for years, I just smashed them with a sledge and got new ones. GL
Clearly I didn't look close enough. Turns out I have the Heavy Duty axle and the drum is integral to the hub. According to haynes, and my eyes now that I'm usisng them, I need to remove the hub retaining flange and half-shaft to get the drum off. Yipee!
Anyone have any advice for doing this? I've never dealt with heavy-duty drum brakes before. I'm basically trying to inspect them because I have some concerns about the upkeep this truck got from the PO. What should I be looking for?
Is there some kind of seal around the axle or something that needs to be changed? To me, it looks like the hub retainer cover holds the fluid in. I'll be changing the diff fluid at the same time also.
If anyone knows anything about this, let me know, because I'm just guessing at this point.
