did ford ever put a 9" rear end in the 73-79 f series? if so where can i find one? and also will it bolt up to my suspension? i have the 7.5" i thik now with low gears. the highest a 7.5 can go is ~3.83 but a 9" can easily do 4.10, that's why im thinking 9 inch. im looking to get more get up outta my l6 and the rear end always keeps popping up as i know it is geared really low, something like 2.75:1

2.75 is a high gear, not low. A friend of mine has a 79 9"out of an F-150 for sale. It has 3.30 gears and a limited slip factory.

So you're saying somebody swapped in 6 cylinder Mustang axle into your truck?

I believe all Ford trucks 1960 something until 1980 something received the 9 inch, or else they have a Dana.

either a dana 44 or a ford 9" will be found in these trucks. and mostlikely it's a 44 you've got.... 2:73 is actually a high ratio. if you go to 3:73 or 3:50 you will have lower gearing.. i.e. more rev's on the highway, and tons of pulling power, but no top end.

a 9" could be under any f-100, f-150 2wd, or 4x4 from '60 to '87. and they should all bolt right up .... mine was from a 84 f-150 4x4

Probably something aftermarket. Could it have been a button for a solenoid valve to control an air locker? Did you see a little tube coming out of the diff cover?

Thanks for using FTE!

The truck was trashed so badly I couldn't tell. I guess the only way to really tell would be to jack it up and look underneath. I hope everyone knows to use jackstands whenever a jack is used. :-X12

The axles in the 67-72 trucks were narrower than the 73-up. Be sure to measure the overall width, and the distance between the spring pads.

I looked at a 79 4x2 last year that had a 6 3/4 rear in it. It was tiny! I asked the guy what it had in it and he said its a 9 in, but the inspection cover gave him away so I left.

i do have the dana 44 in there right now. the truck is just too sligish for my liking sometimes, so i was informed that if you can change the rear ratio you will have better acceleration or something like that that but worse gas milage. since the truck doesn't pull trailers any more (don't have any) i don't need it to have so much torque
