Another fuel problem thread =\

Hey guys !

OK, here is my issue. I have an 88 BII 2.9, 2wd. I replaced the intake gasket a few months ago (was getting water in the oil) got the truck back together, running and timed with almost no problem whatsoever. BUT it didn't fix the water problem, so the truck sat for about 6 months or so. A week ago I went and got a new intake as the old one was pretty rotted (causing the water/ oil problem) I have the truck back together but now it won't start. I have tried everything (and searched here for about 3 hours earlier) I have it pretty much narrowed down to a fuel problem, I KNOW it has spark, the firing order is correct and number 1 TDC matches number 1 on the cap.

I bought a new fuel pump relay today hoping that was the issue.. On the passenger side, I have 3 relays: a brown one, green, and black. The black one is closest to the firewall and as best I can determine is the FP relay. So I replaced that. I checked the inertia switch, it wasnt' tripped but I checked the voltage there to make sure the relay was working (or not working) The strange part is that I only seem to get 7 volts there - is that right ? I jumpered the switch just to rule it out as a possibility but I still don't hear the pumps fire up.

I can hook the HP pump up directly to a battery and it does work. When it's plugged into the harness, it doesn't seem to. I released the pressure on the rail via the schrader valve and after cycling the key on and off a few times I still have no fuel at the release valve. I have measured the voltage at the harness with someone else turning the key and I don't see any voltage there either.. (this was before I replaced the relay - haven't checked again after replacing)

ALSO the only other thing I changed was the oil pressure sending unit - I don't have a gauge on the dash, just the "DOH!" light - I replaced it with a mechanical gauge ... could this have ANYTHING to do with it not getting voltage ? I really can't think of anything else to try, really hoping someone can throw me a bone !

Thanks in advance !

Joe

Welcome to FTE!!!

The green one is normally the fuel pump, try swapping the new one with that one.

Do you have a iring diagram, it will make the diagnostic process much easier.

Done! and Thanks !

Anybody know if 7v to the inertia switch is right ? And does the fuel system look for a low pressure signal from the OE sending unit that I removed?

You should have 12v for the pump and it doesn't look for oil pressure.

You have mail.

JoeyV...I am having the exact problem you are having. It was giving me some ignition trouble prior but I let it sit for 2-3 month and then it would not start. I too assumed it was a fuel problem. If I put some fuel in the intake it acted like it wanted to start. I replaced the HP Fuel Pump relay, jumpered the inertia switch, verified I had spark etc. All of a sudden it fired up after hours of tinkering. I thought I had a bad ground and pulled on the right wire. I got a good Batt and after a few tries it started then died. Long story short I believe it's in the start/ignition circuit. You won't get fuel in the rail if the circuit has a problem. Since I changed the tfi module I am now going after the stator in the distributor...I will let you know if it works.

Check the computer ground wire, which goes right to the negative batt terminal. If i remember correct when its unhooked/corroded th etruck will crank but not fire.
Also,Make certain that evil module on the back of the distributor is in order. When mine went the truck quit randomly and startrd randomly untill it wouldn't fire at all.
