I think it is time for me to replace my suspension. I am pretty sure I still have stock suspension on my 89 Bronco. I would like to lift it about 1" because my tires rub when I cut the wheels in reverse. So here are my questions:
1) can I buy shocks that will give me an extra 1"?
2) Do I have to replace my springs as well?
3)Do I have to replace my rear shocks also?
4)If I can do all this and raise it 1", do I have to make any alterations to anything else on my truck? If so, what?
5)Lastly, what brand/type of shocks and/or springs should I get? I don't do heavy off roading, mostly just to get me from point A to point B and sometimes theres a little mud in between but never a mountain or anything.
well first you need to address the reason your tires are doing that when you back up. something is worn out on the front end. either bushings ,tierods, ball joints etc...
Shocks wont give you any lift period and should never be used for that. you can buy a level springs on JBG that wont require any modifications to anything and still alow stock shocks to be used. but before you do this have the front end looked at and replace anything necessary because those tires shouldnt be doing that so bad.
its not really a bad rubbing. What I believe is happening is they are rubbing the radius arm. It also sometimes rubs the bumper a bit. Thats because my bumper is a little pushed back further than it should be. I need to fix that. Also the rubbing so far hasn't screwed with the tires.
well that size tire is why your rubbing. i got ya now. ebay and jbg offer the level springs or just brake down and spend 500 bucks on a 4" lift. thats what should be above that size tire anyhow.
You dont need to buy a lift if your 33's are rubbing on you RADIUS arms. They reason they are rubbing is because you have them mounted on the stock width rims. Heck, my 31's rubbed the arms on my stock rims. I went to 10" rims on 33's and no rubbing at all. What you need to do is find some 8" rims with a little more backspacing than stock and your rubbing issues are solved.
33.12.5 will fit a stock Bronco. But AGAIN, you need wider rims, with a little more backspacing to clear chassis rubbing. You DO need a lift to clear body rubbing.
MatthewC, 33x12.5s might fit a stock '84 Bronco like yours, and possibly a stock '89 like Ibianc1's, but they definitely won't fit my stock '95. I put a worn 31x10.5 BFG AT off the back of my dad's truck on the front of my Bronco and it barely cleared the front bumper. If I could even get a 33 in there, no way it would have sufficient clearance. I know the front wheel wells on my dad's '88 pickup are a little bigger at the bottom than mine because I measured them (primarily due to the shape of the bumper, I think) - and yours may be bigger still for all I know - but I don't see 33s fitting your average stock 92-96.
Ok So It Sounds Like I Need A Bit Of A Lift. My Thing Is That I Don't Want To Spend A Crap Load Of Money And Do Alot Of Modifications To Accompany The Lift. I'd Like To, If Possible, Just Get Some Springs That Will Give Me An Extra Inch Lift. That Will Stop It From Hitting My Bumper. I Don't Think It Will Solve My Radius Arm Problem. Is There Anything Else I May Be Able To Do Other Than Replacing The Rims? I Just Bought These Rims And Can't Afford To Just Scrap Them.
A leveling kit is about $100 -- that will give you about 1.5" - 2" lift. A 2.5" lift kit is about $300 - $400. You can also move the bumper forward a bit, or trim it.

You could buy some good quality wheel spacer for the front wheels to clear the arms. But then you would want to space the rears out to match......then your getting close to the $$ a set of 8" rims would be. Heck, with a little searching, you could gind a deal on some used ones in good shape. But its your truck.
