Hey, I just installed some Hedman Elite headers on my 460 and wow was that fun. Old exhaust and manifolds came off easier that I could have ever dreamed. But, the passenger side header was a bitch to install. Had to remove starter, almost had to remove tie rods, had to bend transmission cooler lines, and had to wrestle the thing for 2 hours. And after all of that, it shoots exhaust right into the crossmember. How will I ever get an exhaust hooked up to it???
Anyway, what I came here to ask is will it be harmful for me to run straight headers for about 30 miles to the nearest muffler shop to get a custom 3" exhaust with Flowmaster Super 40 3" C/C mufflers? I doubt it will but I really don't have a clue. If it is harmful, I'll have to rig up some type of muff system.
i have a 460 that i want to put headers on, but i don't know if i'd be able to do it myself....is it a job someone that has very little experience can do? if not, how much would it cost to get installed? thanx
Shouldn't be a problem with the gasses, you'd have the same gasses with a muffler or w/o. As far as noise police just tell them you're on the way to the muffler shop, but I think you'll still have noise after the 40's.

Well, this was the first time I have ever installed headers and I think I picked a hard enough rig to break me in. Here are some important things you should do:
Put PB Blaster (or Kroil) on exhaust manifold bolts a few days in advance
Use a really good fitting socket on the manifold bolts
Use steady power until the break loose
Clean the head and all around the ports before installing new headers
Move anything thats in the way (in my case it was the starter)
Be patient and don't remove crap that you really don't have to
i had to do all that just put headers on my 302! pull the starter, take the crossmember out, jack the engine up, i replaced part of my hard transmission lines with rubber transmission lines to get them out of the way, and then finally push them up from underneath! PITA but worth it to me. as far as getting around the crossmember i got the collector extenders from headman they are about 18" long and have a bend in them to get around stuff. i bolted them to the header collector then i just positioned the bend to go around the crossmember! they cost me 20 bucks from summit.
I'm taking the opposite- I think running straight headers with no pipes for thirty miles is not a good idea. Maybe burn a valve up or start a fire? I wouldn't chance it- and didn't when i swapped to a 5.8L It was sooo loud and smelled like gas big time-i only ran it for two minutes then towed it to shop. After system put on perfect!-JMO and experience-Bob
I would say you would be ok. there is a guy around here that runs open headers all of the time on his old jeep with a v8 and his motor is in top notch running order.
