Just musing during my lunch break. I have a new dual exhaust set up hooked to stock manifolds. Each side is welded in one long piece. I want to install some shorty headers which will require cutting the pipe somewhere between the trans Xmember and the mufflers and make a new section up to the collectors. It would be nice if the new sections could be unbolted and removed in the future. Is there some kind of bolt together union I can weld on at the muffler ends?

The later model Ford vehicles use a band style clamp rather than the old school muffler clamps that dug in to the pipe. So the pipes could be taken apart real easy in the future if needed. If possible I would cut your pipes as close to the engine as you can. Make up different "head pipes". Then use those band clamps to connect pipe to pipe. I'll see if I can post a pic of an exhaust system and edit it in here in a bit.
Two types of band clamp are available... one type is for a slip-fit (OD/ID) and the other is a butt joint. I prefer the former and used them throughout my 70s system so it's modular.

Walker Lap-Joint Band Clamps
So do the pipes butt up end to end with those clamps? or still the standard expanded overlap?
One option I was thinking was I could keep the original front portion of pipe if I ever decide to put the stock manifolds on.

Sorry HIO, replied to previous post before I read yours. Got an online supplier for those clamps?
