Hyundai with a different name (same company). Good values, probably a little weak in the safety area though (except the van). Resale ain't the greatest, though.

Would you buy one if you was going to keep it for 10 years ?

Or would you buy an American made?

For 10 years? Hard to say- track record isn't there. I'm not writing them off- the Koreans will give us all fits before it's done- I just wouldn't be a player yet.

10 year/100,000 warrenty on the driveline...hard to beat. I just bought a Hyundai elantra for a comuter vehicle and drive 100+mile each day on the much less traveled two lane to work and I'm getting 35MPG. For my purpose, it would be great, of course your situation may be different. Do a google search and read the reveiws.

My B-I-L has an Sorrento he uses for his commute. He has about 75k on it, only had a couple of problems with it, pretty standard stuff. The only problem has been the wait time on replacement parts. Ricer Boys doesn't carry much for them, and the stealership has taken up to 6 weeks to get replacements in a couple of cases.

I wouldnt buy one. The main reason people buy them is because they are cheap. Thats exactly what they are getting: a cheap vehicle.
No resale value, no track record for dependability.
I also wouldnt buy it because its an import. Im doubting that in 5 years you will be able to go to any local auto parts store and be able to find even the most common replacement parts in stock.
At least with a Ford/GM they usually have parts in stock.

I think Kia's here to stay. Lot of people don't make enough money to buy Fords, GMs, and Chryslers, or don't want two of them anyway....there's a market for new cheap cars, and I think spare parts will become more available as they get a bigger share of the market. I don't see them dying off like Yugo.

Coworker has the little SUV (can't remember what it's called--same caliber as a Geo Tracker). I talk to them every day. It's five or six years old, crowding 100k miles, basically has been pretty solid. The one thing is that when it needs repairs, they are expensive. Other than that they are happy with it.

Wow, here we go again, bashing the imports. I got bad news, 90% of your ford is imported.

I have a friend who bought a second hand Kia Van - kind of as a joke...
It has been quite good.

Don't expect to be able to treat it like a Ford Truck though.

I personally wouldn't touch one with a barge poll, but it is not because of lack of durability or quality, (they went through that stage in the early 90's), I just find them too boring, but again, that is my personal preference.

I'm actually thinking of getting a Sorrento next year, as a nice daily driver vehicle. Think about it- where else can you get a halfway decent looking midsize SUV that actually has a straight axle in the rear, and an IFS system that can handle a little abuse, with good economy, for that price? I mean, the thing beats out an Explorer by $10,000! Believe me, if Ford had done the Escape right, I would buy one without question, but there is no way they will get me into some little sidewinder front drive SUV. Sorry, that isn't a truck in my mind.

Thier prices are plummenting at the moment... Which is good if you want to pick up a few year old one.

I read those same words about Japanese cars in the 60's.

HyundaiKia is in cahoots with DCX.....probably not the worst thing in the world right now, if I remember correctly and they have MANY other money making ventures--live heavy equipment (that itself is worth watching, IMO), so but the shovels and coffin away. Could not be any worse than an Aveo or Vibe and should be better than an Aspire or Festiva! At least H/K doesn't bring in their econoboxes from elsewhere......

While I would not buy anything from them, my brother has a Tiburon that has served his wants (Do/can you have needs with that zoomer???) well and the 3.5L v6 in the Sonata is rated at 250 hp's! Still a joke? Not as much as they once were.

I just buy what serves my need, plain and simple.

(mike, that SUV you mention = Sportage. Those are neat.)

Bought my wife the KIA Rio last year, a 2004. The 1.6l DOHC 4cyl, 5 speed manual. I think the car is awsome. I mean really.....tell me a car for $200 bucks a month that can beat it. Gets like 35 mpg hwy. Its so comfortable for being so small. I've made 2k mile road trips and its been great. Has great pick up for such a small motor.
Yea, had some problems with it within 2 months of buying it. Yes, I was irrate. Turned out to be a faulty fuel delivery computer. They jumped thru hoops to fix it as fast as possible. Overnighting the the new computer from Korea. Gave me a loaner right away. They told me if they didnt have it fixed before my vacation (in 3 days), they would give me a brand new RIO off the lot as a loaner for our trip. The had it fixed in time....
Matter of fact.....anything goes wrong, I get the same mechanic everytime. He even visits with the me and the car when it comes in for oil changes.
My sister has a Hundyia, and brags of similiar customer care with her dealership.
Go ahead, tell me of another company that does the same...I sure havent seen it.
I have no complaints on KIA.
