Vern,
Is there enough room to use nutserts? (I'm not sure if I'm using the right term here) The are kinda like rivets but are a nut. We used to use them to install auto accessories like luggage and roof racks. They are great for blindholes in sheetmetal.
I just went to http://www.mcmaster.com/ and typed in "nutsert" in the search box and found what I was describing.
Check it out, maybe it will work for you
Bobby
Bobby, put up a McMaster part number for a typical size nutsert you use. There are quite a few styles that show up if you use "nutsert" as the search word. That way, Jag can use the part number for the McMaster search and see exactly what you are talking about.
check out harbor freight, yhey have a set ( 4 differt sizes) and the install tool... cost bout $20.00.. works great. if you need another vent assy/ lid pm me, i have a 50 f3 parts truck....
Thanks Bobby, now I see what you guys are talking about. They look a lot wall anchors for hanging pictures. I wonder if small wall anchors could be used with a little grinding to remove most of the two metal barbs? Those are readily available at Kmart for about 89 cents. Jag
Jag, while posting this info that thought crossed my mind also. I think that the nutserts could be found locally, probably at your nearest NAPA, autobody supply store, W.W.Grainger, or a fastener store.
I'm not sure how small you can get the nutserts, they might be too big for the cowl vent problems that Vern was having. I havent started messing with my cowl vent. Mine doesn't leak. Of course thats probably due to the fact that the trucks has been sitting in the garage for the last few years and the only moistures its has had on the cowl is from the condensation from a frosty beveragae...
...I guess I could drink more and see if I can generate enough condensation dripping on the cowl to check for leaks

Thanks, if I can't fix mine I will certainly contact you. My vent assembly seems to be fine. It's the lid that if causing the grief...
I'm going to check with NAPA this weekend and see what they have in the way of nutserts. Right now my vent assembly is being derusted in an electrolysis vat. This old truck sat under an oak tree for at least 5 years before I bought it so I expected to have problems with the vent.

I picked up some nylon nutserts not unlike those you use to mount license plates....only smaller. I think they will do the job. I certainly don't want that lid flying off at 70 MPH cruising down the interstate. I'll let you know how it works out...

Cabby,
It doesn't look like I am going to be able to use my cowl vent cover. If you still have one or if anyone else has a 48-50 cover let me know. I am also in the market for a good ash tray. Apparently, the spring that keeps it in place is gone on mine...
