I'm thinking about purchasing this 86 F150 XLT. Here is the description from the seller..
I have a 86 F-150 XLT With a fuel injected 302, Power windows & locks, Automatic w/overdrive, Shift Kit + transcooler, Bedliner, DUAL TANKS! Truck is in excellent overall condition has about 160,000 miles no rust / rot out black w/fair paint no crash damange or major dents interior is clean and in great shape. Truck has ac but is nonfunctional. It is a 2wd short bed. It is allready wired for trailer lights and i will include a 2" ball mounted to the bumperhitch.
Now, he also says
It has a problem of some sort. It will start and barely idle but will eventualy die out on its own or if you give it any gas. I suspect it is a fuel delivery issue but cant be sure.
Anyone have any idea what could possibly be wrong? Does $800 sound like a fair price as it sits? How easy are the fuel systems on these vechiles to work on. Is it something I could probably fix myself?
It could possibly be a fuel pump, in one or both gas tanks...
One or more injectors clogged.
It''s hard to say without knowing more...
If it was me, I wouldn't buy it, but I already have a 1981 f-150 soo...
It depends on what you want. Does the truck have all the features that you are looking for? Do you like the engine, tranny setup. Do you like the color? All these would be factors in buying something that you would enjoy for years to come. Or hate with a passion.
I say look at it, and if you really like it, and you think the problems are fixable, then I say go for it. But if you don't like the color, or don't like something about the truck, or think it would be way too much money to fix then, pass it by. There will be another one around later that you will probably like better. Etc...
I am thinking the same as 81-F-150-Explorer. I had a simular problem on an 89 150 it turned out to be the feed and return on the sending unit had rusted through pin holes coming out of the tank. Might even be clogged fuel filter. give it enough gas to start but when pressure comes up it starves the engine.
