I have a 95 F150 with the 5.0 and a 4R70W tranny. My question is how do I find out if this is a roller motor (cam, lifters, rocker arms) or not. Is there a code in the VIN? Any info would be much appreciated.
Does anyone know what year Ford started putting roller cams in the trucks? I know, since I've had them apart that both my 90 Bronco and 90 F150 4X4 with 5.0's and AOD trans have regular flat tappet cams. My 91 Bronco with 351W and my 93 Bronco with 5.0 both run too good to take apart and look for a roller cam.
In 91 5.0 trucks started to get roller cams and by 92 they were all roller cams. The 5.8 didn't start getting roller cams untill a little later 94-95 is when they started i think.
Just curiosity I guess. I've heard that they were but I also know there are some differences between the truck 5.0 and the Mustang and I didn't know if this was one of them. Anyway the truck only has 79000 on it but I just got it about a month ago so I'm trying to get all the info I can for future reference. Thinking about doing some ignition upgrades and maybe a "cat-back" to see if I can get some low-end torque out of it but other than that the truck runs and looks great. Anyway thanks guys for the responses.
a cat back wont give you any gains but sounds. if you want to change the exhaust you need to start at the exhaust manifolds back. getting a set of headers, bassini Y pipe and 3" single exhaust with hi flow cat will give you actual gains. the ignition for the most part is fine, so i would leave it as is for now. you might look into rear gears or a cam swap to gain a little more low end.
