replace your stock muffler with the walker big truck muffler if you don't want to spend a lot of $$ but you want to improve the exhaust flow and lower the egts...
on a powerstroke it's not all the more noisey at idle but when hitting high RPM's it does start to rumble. but it sounds really good! yes you will lower your egt's since the muffler isn't there to hold in heat and backup exhaust.
i run a tymar 3-3.5" DP with a 4.5" straight pipe all the way to behind the rear axle. i love it.
Gunfighter1, it depends on the year of your truck. If you have an OBS (original body style), the muffler really isn't bad. It is a straight through design and a Walker BTM won't give much improvement. However, the squashed downpipe is a disaster and needs to be replaced right away. A 3" DP will fit with only very minor mod to the firewall.
If you have a 99 or later Super Duty, they come with a nice, smooth 3 1/2" DP (which reduces to 3" next to the firewall), but have a crappy and restrictive reverse flow mufller. If you have a 99 or later, replace the original muffler with Walker BTM for a nice improvement in EGT and sound.
If you have a cat on there it won't sound a whole lot different just a little louder in the high RPM's like fishman said. I removed my muffler before I removed the cat, and the cat make a much larger difference in sound!!
I removed my muffler and like the sound. When I was thinking about doing it someone sent me a wav file. I've posted it for others, www.milchman.us/nomuffler.wav
