Your cheapest bet is to hit up the closest miltary base and see when they hold surplus auctions or similar. For leafs check with local offroad shop and see what they have, or try all the lift companies and tell them you spring eye to spring eye (i would get the longest leafs you can as from the sounds of it your going to be building a fairly decent sized truck and the longer leafs will ride smooth as they won't be banna shaped as bad). then the amount of lift you want and go from there.
i think im going to put air bags on each drop bracket so i can have a smoother ride, but plub the bags so each corner 2 deflate and inflate at the same rate for minimizing on pinion trouble
i would, but i want the old schoolness to it. thats why im going to points and condensor, because electrical is not my game. ill have electrical, but it will be minimal
How are air bags going to give you a smoother ride when you use them with leaf springs?? If anything they'll make the ride rougher by limiting spring travel. Bags are used for overload purposes to keep the spring from sagging. The only way they'll make for a smooth ride is if you go to a linked suspension setup which is evidently not "old school" enough for you.
dude, you asked and we (they) answered! what are you looking for more specifically? and what is old skool to you and why? (other than simplicity which can actually become quite complex)
if you want simplicity go with leafs but unless you know alot about them and can tune them like you want them dont expect a good ride!
if u want to put on military suspension, you should watch the tv show trucks. the host, stacey, is putting on rockwell axles with hydraulic steering and 50'' tires. you can go to this website, http://www.truckstv.com/ and look for the project named seargent rock.
yea b/c everyone can afford stuff like the 4 wheel disc brake kit that costs like $3000! that show is really hardcore and all, i bet i could build a nice rig with all the money and parts and shop time he gets! BTW.... what does the suspension have to do with the rockwells he is putting under that thing.
speaking of that project truck on there, i was laughing because hes sinking all this money into high dollar lockers and new drive flanges, but hes still running like 30-40-50 year old course spline shafts with that huge motor and 49's....since money is no object, i really dont see why he didnt go with the 2 inch 47 spline cro-mo's from overson too?
