My 99 F250 SD, 4X4, 120K miles is shifting wierd. When cold seems OK. When warmed up it is soft and mush going into drive and sometimes the lower gears shift hard. Between 45 and 50 it acts like it wants to shift but won't until I let off the gas evern when just maintaining the speed it won't then when I let off sometimes it just won't stay in drive.
I did have some other problems with the alternator that went out with me miles from anywhere and I had to drive it until the batteries went completely dead, chich stops you in your tracks. I was able to remove one of the batteries and put the camper battery in, disconnected the oterh dead battery and got almost to town before it conked ut again. Repalced the alternator, both batteries, and serpentine belt. Now just a few days later the transmission acts like it has lost its brain.
Any help before I turn it over to the local dealer would be appreciated. I don't like the idea of putting a new transmissin or having it rebuilt but is that is what it takes.........
Well. Let see what we got.. First thig to start out is does your OD light flash? if it does you need to get the codes off of it. I just had simialr problems with my trans.. Although I chose to rebuild it extra.. but for diff reasons... but i had a bad sensor some some other stuff too.. let me nkow
No flashing OD light, it still works as advertised but does not flash. I don't have any way to get the codes from it either without taking it in to someone who has
So there's no OD light (trans light)... and no check engine light? how's the fluid level? And doe you have a trans temp guage? either a pillar or one in the dash? if so how hot is she getting?
Mine tranny does the same thing as described above... No codes and no flashing OD lights. I do have gauges and I'm running very high temps w/ no load! It's running about 190-195 after the tranny warms up!! I'm afraid to tow anything right now till I figure it out. I ordered the tru-cool tranny cooler 4739 MAX and the sonnax tricumulator valve.. I pray this will remedy my symptoms! Any thoughts? Once your tranny begins to slip and act funny is it pretty much down hill from here and I should just preserve it as long as as I can and start saving for a new one???
Fluid level is correct, pure stock truck, no gauges, the only mod is the AIS filter. It is not slipping once it shifts there is no slippage, it pulls great. I decided to findout if it was slipping last night on the way home. Either it was going to fail completely or not. Drove it hard and no slippage, just didn't want to upshift between 3rd and fourth, and between second and thrid was a hard shift. The other thing I noticed the tourque converter is locking up the same way it always has, almost feels like an additional gear when it does. Appears to me to be either a valve body problem or electronic control not getting the input it needs. Most of the time when i let off it will shift properly, once in a while it simply goes back to the previous gear but doesn't slip because if you accelerate it does the same way it always did. Then when you let off it will shift normally most of the time. When it is cold no problem this only occurs after driving for several miles, like to town, 25 miles, then in stop and go traffic it seems the worst.
Don't want it to start slipping so parked it for a couple days waiting on an appointment with the dealer.
Thanks for the info Kawika, I am more informed now to talk to the stealership. Unfortunately I will probably let my money do most of the talking. Because of my budget I am going to have to get it rebuilt. I also have front brakes for the third time, rotors were repalced at 80K, so just new pads this time. After the Transmission is done they will work on the IDM problem.
