Anyone have an old GMC V-6? I've always been a Ford fan, but i think GM used to build a good engine back when GMC was a different engine than chevy. Anyway i have a 305 and NP435 out of a '68 GMC 2500. These things are a massive chunk of cast iron weighing 850lbs!
There was also a 350 version of that V6 engine block. From what I heard, it only fits the three speed tranny. Massive torque builder but it was definately not built for speed!
Those old GMC V6's were great. That particular family had the V6 305 (A-E variations), V6 351, V6 401 and V6 478. Then there was the monstrous 12 cylinder 702 which was more or less, 2 351's.
The 305 only had 150-165 HP, but torque ranged from 260-280 lb ft in the 1400-1800 RPM range.
The 478 was a bit of an outsider in the family because it had a longer 3.86" stroke vs the standard 3.58" stroke on the rest. Thus the torque figures for the 478 come in around 440 lb ft @ 1400 RPM. Now that's low end torque!
I had a GMC dual-axle 22' flatbed with the V6, five-speed and two-speed axle. Used it to deliver concrete block and elevator weights, and towed a large forklift at the same time. It was possibly the best pulling truck I've ever driven, and when I opened the hood there was this little V6 in there to surprise anyone that saw it.
How old are you talking about. My uncle has a 65 chevy wrecker with the 305 V-6. Incidently, I blew that engine up when i was 16. Only bacause I did'nt check the oil like he told me .
I was just curious on the age.
Ya i own one of those 305 V-6 in my 1969 GMC. It is only a half ton but it will pull 12k easily. The motor has 220k on it and runs butiful. That is the best motor GM ever made.
I always post this when the discussion comes around as to how a V6 can't make the same torque as an inline, or how big bore/short stroke motors can't make torque...
More info than you need. Look for the F700 in here.
