Clutch Replacement
Clutch Replacement
Any idea how much it could cost to replace the clutch in my '98 F150 4.6L 281 CID 4WD ? Beginning to develop a lot of "play", engaging only 2-3 inches off the floor; Gears become very difficult (often impossible) to shift after first hour or so of driving.
Usually is will range between $400 and $750. Make sure to opt to replace the slave cylinder. By the time that the clutch needs to be replaced, the slave cylinder has gone through a lot of travel, and the old dirty brake fluid in the system can damage the seals. I have seen many people not replace the slave cylinder, and within a month or two it will start to leak all over the clutch ruining it, and it will not be under warantee. So, then you will have to pay for it all over again. Just my $0.02.
Talking about brake fluid in the clutch when was the last time it was changed. It does not sound like a clutch plate problem but more of a slave or clutch master cylinder problem. If there are no leaks then I would change the fluid and re try. from my ecperience Normally when the clutch goes it just spinns more and more as it goes. Of course whith new style vehicles things are different.
