Put a vacuum tee
on the vacuum line that runs to the distributor, and from the tee run a vacuum to the EGR. Plug any other vacuums ports not in use.
Try running your engine a 10 degrees BTC, 12 degrees seem a bit high.
On your thermostat housing, trying running a cooler thermostat. Shop around or call the automotive stores and check what store has the lowest temperature rating thermostat.
