My 03 expy has been hard to start for the last few months. it cranks strong but it usually will only start on the second turn of the key. also it seems to be a little slugish when you hit the gas. Fuel pressure registers 55psi. this seems high but a ford tech i know says that is "within spec" Also when you turn the key to run the fuel pressure jumps to 55 but falls back to 0 within 3 seconds. I kmow that's not right. thanks for the help!
I instaled a new fuel pump yesterday and checked the pressure. it is still running at 55 psi. the only differance is that now when i shut the truck off it stays there.
Try starting it at part throttle, if it fires right away it is a dirty or bad IAC valve. The throttle blade on these motors is almost fully closed at idle. As far as the pressure dropping off that is normal just not that fast as you found after changing pumps. I believe the idea is for the pump to build pressure, purge any trapped air in the fuel rails and hold pressure while you start since the battery voltage drops off with the starter engaged and the pump performance drops way off. Let us know what happens.
Just bought an '03 last week. Had same problem.... turns over fine, but takes a while. Ford replaced the starter, the fuel pump and sending unit. Starts right up now!

I hope it was under warranty.
Was the starter bad or was this another example of the mechanics guess work?
