ok this is my first post so please excuse the rambling i might do lol. I bought an 87 f150 4x4 with a 351w and an auto tranny with hopes of having a good cheap truck however after i bought the truck i discovered the 4x4 didnt even work well by process of elimination i discovered a busted outer axle shaft of the front pass. side so i got that fixed (myself may i add lol) so im not real mechanical but i have discovered the oil pressure seems to be low i had a valve cover gasket leaking bad i got it fixed i also changed the oil and filter and just to be safe i installed a manual oil pressure gauge. so this new gauge reads low and i was just wondering if somehow the hole where you put the gauge sensor could somehow be plugged, on cold startup its like 55 psi when its at a hot idle its at like around 0 but there is no bad noises coming from the engine so i guess my question is
if the oil pressure is really 0 wouldnt the engine be knocking or something and the compression is like 132 wouldnt that be affected by 0 oil pressure
If your oil pressure was really 0 psi, you would hear it. It's not affected by compression.
I find it very strange that the gauge says your pressure is 55 at startup and 0 at warm idle. With the factory gauge, does the red 'engine' light come on at warm idle?
yes the red engine light came on when the factory gauge went down but as far as i can tell the engine is not knocking or making any other interesting noises
it is kinda hot out right now >90 and when i go drive it around and come to a stop the oil pressure is right at 0 any ideas on how i can find out if this is correct?
also any ideas on how to get the engine light off since i unhooked the factory oil sensor the light has stayed on?[B][I]
[B][I]im really at a loss here i mean i know im 2 for 2 on gauges but is there any way the sensor hole can be plugged i mean that is a big fluctuation in oil pressure i have another motor i can put in but the compression was only like 126 or somewhere close with a press in compression tester (i know they arent as accurate but thats all i had at the time, i dont have the money for a rebuild do you guys think i should make the swap
If you have 55 lbs cold and it soon drops to 0 as it warms up, you probably have bad main bearings, you may not have rods knocking yet but you can most likely hear the mains, a low rumbly sound, rod knock will follow soon.
It's major overhaul time and a crank kit.
