Once the evaporator is replaced the compressor will likely go within 12 months. I took the plunge and replaced all of this on mine last year and I've had no problems since. I spent the money because the rest of my vehicle is in such good shape (cosmetically and mechanically) and I'm glad I did.
Yes the mechanic was puzzled by this also. I would have thought that it would leak the same whether under pressure or vacuum. And Texan, I was thinking the same way - if I replace the evaporator now, next it will be the compressor, or the condenser will get hit by a stone and leak, or one of the hoses will blow, or...
With the mileage I have on it plus the potential for the engine to fail because of the timing belt tensioners, I think it's time I started looking for a newer vehicle. Reliability is very important with me, being in the fire service as well as commuting 70 miles every day.
Hey JoeS, we have 2 exploders, a 92 (328k) and a 97 (300K) both used as Dive Rescue First responder, so dont throw in the towel yet. There is probably lots of life in the old girl, just needs some TLC....
